Irish Participation in the EUROPHILEX 2025 Show
Europhilex 2025 – Birmingham – 7 – 11 May 2025
A European international stamp exhibition was held at the NEC Birmingham from 7 to 11 May 2025. After the UK and USA, Ireland was the largest exhibitor at the show with 20 exhibits and 1 literature entry, a great achievement for one of the smaller members in the FEPA[i] group. This was the largest number of exhibits at an international show under the Irish flag. The entries were brought to/from Birmingham by DSS members Brian Warren (Commissioner) and Dr Anthony Hughes (Assistant Commissioner) who are seen in the photograph busy at work placing Brian Harmon’s exhibit in the frames.
The exhibits were across all categories and the medal awards ranged from Silver-Bronze to Large Gold. The Large Gold was awarded to Dr. Brian Callan for his 8 frame Cork Postal History. This is only the second large gold achieved by Ireland at international level; the first was awarded to Des Quail for his Irish Postal History exhibit in Paris in 2014. Well done, Brian. A full list of the exhibitors and the awards are attached.

The DSS 2025 “ AWAY DAY “
The AWAY DAY this year will be to visit the Great Leviathan Telescope at Birr Castle, Co. Offaly.
The Telescope was built in 1845 by the Earl of Ross and was the biggest telescope in the world at the time, measuring 72 metres, and remained so until 1914.
The plan is to go by coach to Birr Castle where we will have the official guided tour after which the coach will take us into Birr town where we will have lunch.
We will be on a strict timetable as our tour is scheduled for 12.30 pm, and lunch is booked for 2 pm, so we would ask members not to be late arriving at the Collection Point as the coach will have to leave on time.
Collection Point on Saturday Morning 17th May will be Abbey Street, opposite Wynns Hotel.
Departure Time will be 10 am.
After lunch, we will then head back to Dublin arriving sometime around 5.30 pm at the original Collection Point.
We hope an enjoyable time will be had by all.
